The car mats are the parts in which bacteria, dust, and dirt lies. Above all, those who have breathing difficulties, suffer from allergies, or get sick easily, will be able to find great benefit if, in the passenger compartment, the carpet is sanitized and clean.
Little weight is often given to cleaning mats, thinking that a pass with the vacuum cleaner once every now and then can be enough, but the reality is very different. It is helpful to keep the upholstery clean, mainly if you use the means of transport for work (for example, commercial vehicles or representative machines).
How to clean car mats the materials to be treated
Before indicating the cleaning methods of the car mats, it is good to dwell on the materials with which they are produced. This is because from one material to another, they can change the detergents to be used.
• carpet: the car mats made in this material are the most difficult to clean because the carpet used is usually very narrow knitted. This involves a greater difficulty in cleaning, as impurities remain more easily trapped within the material.
• Fabric: albeit in disuse, there are fabric mats, especially on dated cars or if purchased on the Aftermarket. These are usually washable in the washing machine because they are used more than anything else, like a carpet on top.
• Similar carpet: the car mats in similar carpets are the most common. In reality, it is a synthetic material that simulates the carpet effect. The surface finish can be different, but the substance does not change. 90% of the cars are sold with this type of upholstery.
• Rubber: rubber mats are usually used on work vehicles or on the neo-course cars of the winter months (not to wet and muddy the most valuable mats). In addition, the mats commonly present on cars also have rubberized parts.
First phase Cleaning Auto mats the suction
Any advice on how to clean the car mats must be at the beginning of the passage with the vacuum cleaner. Even before they should be removed from their positions, beaten with a beater or against a metal railing (as is often present in car washing centers) or still with each other and subsequently passed with the aspirator, avoid banging the carpet against walls or timber: you would not only risk ruining the surface, but you may have a transfer of the plaster (if you bang the mat against a white wall, you will find yourself with the whitish carpet).
Second phase cleaning car mats the detergent
For the rubber mats, cleaning is simpler because a pass is sufficient with the water rod or with the pressure washer and possibly a clean with water and neutral soap, helping itself with a brush. Then move on to the rinse phase.
The cleaning of the car mats made with other materials is more complicated. There are special detergents on the market that must be sprayed evenly and left to act for a few minutes. Still, subsequently, the action of a sponge or a small soft bristle brush is necessary (not purchase a medium or hard bristle for any reason because You would ruin the mat).
Better then move on to rinse, which should take place at low pressure (fill a bucket of warm water and throw it over or pass the carpet under the jet of a tap). Alternatively, it is possible to take a new sponge, wet it, and pass it over the tissue of the carpet always in the same sense.
Some alternative products are special foams that have the task of trapping dirt. The rest of the procedure is identical to the one just described.
There is also a dry cleaning system: there are products that are designed for cleaning the car upholstery that does not require water. In this case, it is good to follow the instructions indicated on the purchase package. Try to work outdoors because this kind of detergent tends to dust (similar to talcum powder).
For the rubber part that is located posteriorly, a bucket with soap and water is sufficient. A brush and your arm do the rest.
First, it is advisable to proceed with the washing of the rubberized area of the mat (the back) and then dedicate yourself to the carpet (the visible surface).
If you have no way to buy special detergent to clean the mats, you can use the detergent powder for the washing machine, but be careful not to overdo it in the dosage, as it becomes difficult to completely during rinsing.
Third phase of cleaning car mats drying
If the day is sunny you might consider hanging out the carpets in the shade (they would fade in the sun) in a ventilated area. Here is a little trick: when you roll them out, do it vertically so that the mats do not have folds or curves. In this way you can keep the shape and dry both in the front and in the back (rubberized). Take care to firmly fix the mats as the water, due to the gravity effect, after a few minutes will tend to go downwards, making the object very heavy and unbalancing it.
If you are in a hurry, you can dry your car mats with a jet of hot air (for example with a hairdryer). This method is recommended in case of rinsing carried out only with a sponge. The useful suggestion for yield and operational safety is to keep the appliance about 30 cm from the surface of the mat. The fibers that make up the fabric are synthetic and with excessive heat could be damaged.
The ideal solution would be to first dry the mat with a towel with good absorbency and then finish the process with a hairdryer, selecting warm air.
